Miller Park
Miller Park debuted on April 6, 2001 when Milwaukee
Brewers pitcher Jeff D’Amico through a first pitch strike to Cincinnati
Reds shortstop Barry Larkin. A matrix scoreboard in the outfield
measures 76 feet by 32 feet, and on top of that lies a color
replay board 48 feet by 37 feet. Miller Park can hold almost
43,000 people and was built with the help of 70,000 cubic yards
of concrete. The field is symmetrical for the most part, but
was designed with the base runners in mind. The outfield fences
are not “straight” and
this can cause the baseball to take awkward bounces,
allowing runners to take that extra base.
The park is equipped
with 550 television monitors dispersed throughout
the stadium and also has 2,000 stereo speakers installed. It
would take 4,655,926,995 baseballs to fill Miller Park and the
weight is the equivalent of 62,500,000 16-pound bowling balls.
Helfaer Field, a miniature version of Miller Park, is located
on the premises as well. Anyone interested can apply to bring
a group to reserve the field to play baseball, softball, or even
kickball. Helfaer Field is built on the exact site of the old
County Stadium, the Brewers old home.
