Yankee Stadium
In 2006, the New York Yankees started construction plans to demolish historic Yankee Stadium to be replaced with a new state of the art, $1.3 billion stadium for the 2009 season. New Yankee Stadium will seat an overall capacity of 52,325. The most expensive stadium built in the United States, New Yankee Stadium, will also be the second most expensive stadium in the world. Ticket sales are high as Yankees fans say goodbye to the old, historic Yankee Stadium and in with the New Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees made what is likely to be the biggest baseball related purchase of all-time in 1920 when they bought George Herman (Babe) Ruth from the Boston Red Sox, but the following year, they bought 10 acres of land in the West Bronx. In only 283 working days, Yankee Stadium was created. In 1937, the original design of the upper-deck was altered slightly to allow home runs to left and right field to reach that level. In 1946, lights were installed throughout the stadium, but these were the only major changes in the first 45 years of the stadium.
The Yankees added an electronic message board in 1959 and in 1967, they spent almost $1.5 million on 90 tons of paint to remodel with entire stadium. In 1973, after 50 years in their ballpark, Yankee Stadium was essentially destroyed and totally rebuilt. In its younger days, Yankee Stadium also played host to numerous other events while the Yankees were on the road or not in season. Boxing was very popular in the early 20th century, and college football even had a home there. Also residing in Yankee Stadium were events for concerts, pro football, soccer, and religious ceremonies.
